Summary

Sometimes bitter rivalries can brew something sweet

Theo Mori wants to escape。 Leaving Vermont for college means getting away from working at his parents’ Asian American café and dealing with their archrivals’ hopeless son Gabi who’s lost the soccer team more games than Theo can count。

Gabi Moreno is miserably stuck in the closet。 Forced to play soccer to hide his love for dance and iced out by Theo, the only openly gay guy at school, Gabi’s only reprieve is his parents’ Puerto Rican bakery and his plans to take over after graduation。

But the town’s new fusion café changes everything。 Between the Mori’s struggling shop and the Moreno’s plan to sell their bakery in the face of the competition, both boys find their dreams in jeopardy。 Then Theo has an idea—sell photo-worthy food covertly at school to offset their losses。 When he sprains his wrist and Gabi gets roped in to help, they realize they need to work together to save their parents’ shops but will the new feelings rising between them be enough to send their future plans up in smoke?

Took me a while to finish this one cause I was kinda in a reading slump but I loved this book。 I do wish there was a little more romance but I loved the plot and the rivals to lovers arc。

rating: 3 stars this was a decent read!! there were some things i really liked about it and some things i didn’t。 i liked the main characters and their development but i didn’t really like the side characters and i felt the pacing was rushed towards the end。 so yeah!! won’t say i LOVED this book but i didn’t hate it either。

Adorable and fun。 Love the alternate pov and the narrators were great。 Fun authentic story -highly recommend for all libraries。 Cursing the only thing people might object to and one reference to a friend grumpy when he doesn’t get sex。

Five stars。 This was the cutest book I've probably ever read。 I listened this audiobook as a reader but also as a writer - a lot of writers can learn from this novel。Because this book is a masterclass in a few things。 The book introduced the stakes early on, we know what the characters want and what will happen if they don't get it。 We get to know the characters' strengths and flaws and how the flaws come into play when push comes to shove。We understand from the get-go that this is going to be a Five stars。 This was the cutest book I've probably ever read。 I listened this audiobook as a reader but also as a writer - a lot of writers can learn from this novel。Because this book is a masterclass in a few things。 The book introduced the stakes early on, we know what the characters want and what will happen if they don't get it。 We get to know the characters' strengths and flaws and how the flaws come into play when push comes to shove。We understand from the get-go that this is going to be an enemies-to-lovers romance, yet another thing this book executes better than I've seen in a long time。 We see what kind of opposites the two main characters are and how they complement one another。This was also a fantastic display of how to realistically show issues like homophobia and white supremacy while still maintaining the genre designation (YA romcom)。I have no complaints, really。 I often have complaints。 But not this time。 。。。more

I didn’t hated this but didn’t loved it either。 The parents were terrible and I didn’t really believed the enemies to lovers part of the story。 I mean Theo didn’t actually know Gabi to hating him and then they fall in love super fast after hating each other。 That wasn’t realistic or believable for me。 Overall it was a great time but I unfortunately didn’t loved it as much as I wanted to。

A lot of the reason I stopped reading YA is because YA parents are the worst。 After becoming a parent I just wasn’t sure I could relate to YA in the same level because like sure I’m going to make mistakes but am I going to be homophobic in front of my kids friends? No who does this。 Also the parents didn’t care at all that their businesses were closing down and it was all on their kids? Idk it was not realistic and it took me out of the story

This was absolutely adorable。 The rivals to lovers trope is always a favorite of mine and this book did that so nicely。 I loved the characters so much, having the switching POV and seeing a different perspective was really well done as well。 It was a lighthearted and fun read, the angst was really light, and the humor was great。 I seriously loved this book so much, highly recommend reading it!!Cafés LightheartedHappy EndingRivals to LoversGood Friendships

Great! But I feel like Theo doesn't? He's just a bit of a dick。 IMPORTANT Queer characters in books, even when they're the MC do not have to be inherently good people, they don't have to be perfect。 I feel like a lot of queer characters get held up to a standard because they're queer and have to be good people - This is not the case。 However - They have to have some feature that makes you root for them even when they're a bit of an ass。 I feel like Theo didn't have that until much too late in the book to the point where I didn't care。 I didn't care that he let his walls down for Gabi or that he opened up to his parents / brother。So Theo = douche undeserving of Gabi。However Gabi (who is sweet clumsy bean and I kinda like him) is not without faults。I really hated the fact he had the relationship he did with his dance teacher。 Like having a teachers phone number at school and messaging them privately about personal things? No。 Weird and kind of groomy?? It made me really uncomfortable。 Queer teens have THEIR teacher okay, for most of it's English / Art teachers。 You trust them and spend time their classroom and vent, that's fine。 This? This was weird。 If my brother (who is the same age as the MCs) was messaging his teacher on their personal phone about personal things I'd report them。 Weird。Also I am beyond done with homophobic parents in YA books。 I'm done, I'm bored, not everyone in the older generation is homophobic and it's so disheartening in queer YA books to always have this as a running theme。 I have decided I don't want to read about homophobic parents anymore。 I really don't like it, there is a way of adding family conflict without making the parents homophobic。 There was far too much going on this book for me。 It should have been a cute fluffy rivals (not enemies) to lovers book about two cafes coming together - But what it felt like instead was three different stories shoved together。 Were we supposed to care about Gabi's dancing? The soccer? The home-coming dance? I have no idea and in the end there was so much that instead of caring about it all I cared about nothing。 The soccer / dancing subplot was not needed, make that it's own story it was required here at all。 It felt like a lazy reason for Theo and Gabi to spend time together。The ending felt unreal and a bit lazy to me - When discussing this in our buddy read chat the way this ended was how we all sad we didn't want it to end but how we all thought it was going to。 It's done, it's read, it was not my cuppa tea at all and that's fine。 Somewhere in all the baked goods and caffeine, I think I caught feelings for Gabriel Moreno。 Fuck。 。。。more

This was a book I was pretty excited about after I read and enjoyed the author's debut novel。 The premise of two rivals coming together, enemies-to-lovers, is such a classic trope, but this time we get it with diverse queer characters。 If this was the only trope that was hit on within this novel, I think things could have flowed a lot better, and the romantic aspect would have read a lot stronger。 But, in addition to enemies-to-lovers, we also get a rush to save a closing restaurant, a rush to f This was a book I was pretty excited about after I read and enjoyed the author's debut novel。 The premise of two rivals coming together, enemies-to-lovers, is such a classic trope, but this time we get it with diverse queer characters。 If this was the only trope that was hit on within this novel, I think things could have flowed a lot better, and the romantic aspect would have read a lot stronger。 But, in addition to enemies-to-lovers, we also get a rush to save a closing restaurant, a rush to fulfill homecoming duties, a rush to learn soccer before the big homecoming game, and coming out to homophobic parents。 It's a lot to unpack in one book in a short amount of time。In this book, we have two main protagonists, the two rivals, Gabi Moreno and Theo Mori。 Each chapter flips back and forth between the two perspectives。 The author does an amazing job at creating a unique voice for each character。 I had a preference for Gabi as he was a better character overall and not as much of a curmudgeon as Theo。 That's one thing that followed from the author's first book, characters that come off as unlikeable for a majority of the book。 This happened with Theo, he was not an easy perspective to read from in the first half of this book。 I found him to be very self-centered and annoying, but his character improved when he finally realized how much of an a-hole he was being。 He still had his moments of being insufferable, but it got easier to swallow as the book went on。As someone from a Latinx background, I have experienced the old way of thinking, aka homophobia, that happens a lot in that culture。 I felt it easy to relate to not only Gabi's experiences, but his fears of coming out to his family。 This is where too many concepts in one book felt like it weakened the overall story。 Gabi's coming out not only felt rushed, I actually felt a bit uncomfortable with how there was a bit of pressure from Theo too。 The way Gabi's parents were written made it seem like it may not have been safe for Gabi to be openly gay, and I'm surprised there was no part in the book addressing how coming out could be dangerous for people in Gabi's situation。 That whole portion could have been handled with a bit more thought and care in my opinion。 Though I appreciate the struggles shown。We also see friction between Gabi and his best friend surrounding homecoming。 This is a pain point from the beginning, and they do somewhat resolve their issues together by the end。 However, I was extremely surprised that Gabi would attend his homecoming dance and not even interact with his best friend。 There was no mention of her at all! It was just odd to me after her heavy presence at the beginning of the book, along with the fact that she's the first person Gabi had ever come out as gay to。 I think there were too many moving parts for the author to wrap up so quickly in a short amount of time and it made quite a few things like this fall flat。 And I'm including the romance aspect in this。 I got more friend vibes from Gabi and Theo than romance vibes。 It almost felt like a 'well we're the only two gay guys in the school we must pair up' kind of relationship。 They came off better as just good friends。This is a book that I'd let others decide if they really want to pick it up or not。 I went in with too high of expectations, and I was a little bit disappointed with the outcome。 I still enjoyed the read overall, but there were quite a few plot points that didn’t feel strong enough。 There weren’t as many likable characters in this book as there were in the author’s debut novel。 I found some characters to be a tad annoying。 Even Gabi, who I loved, had some annoying character moments where I wanted to yell at him。 The book had some great moments and some not-so-great moments。 It would have been a lot better if the book just focused on one or two of the many moving plot lines。 。。。more

Rating: 4/10To be completely honest, if I hadn't received this as an ARC and if it wasn't our book club pick of the month, I probably would have DNFed this by the 50% mark。 I was super excited to read this one because on paper it ticks a lot of boxes that I love (2 BIPOC MCs written by a queer/bipoc author who uses neopronouns。 Yes, more of that please!)。 It was overall okay, but I had a lot of annoyances that just kept adding up。 It's a quick, easy to read YA, so if you like YA by all means giv Rating: 4/10To be completely honest, if I hadn't received this as an ARC and if it wasn't our book club pick of the month, I probably would have DNFed this by the 50% mark。 I was super excited to read this one because on paper it ticks a lot of boxes that I love (2 BIPOC MCs written by a queer/bipoc author who uses neopronouns。 Yes, more of that please!)。 It was overall okay, but I had a lot of annoyances that just kept adding up。 It's a quick, easy to read YA, so if you like YA by all means give it a shot, but here are some of the problems with it for me:1。 This is marketed as enemies/rivals to lovers but it isn't。 It's one character (Theo) who is absolutely mean to the super sweet LI for absolutely no reason just because they are both from "rivaling" cafes。 One person in our book club said it should really be marketed as a bully romance, and I have to agree with that。 By the final act, I absolutely did not believe that either of these two characters actually liked each other and rolled my eyes when they got together。 If you like bully romances this might be more your thing。2。 Theo is the main character (and even though it's dual pov with Gabi, Theo feels like the mc) and he is SO unlikable。 I absolutely did not like his character at all。 He is mean to everyone for absolutely no reason。 He's mean to the LI Gabi, he's mean to his best friend Justin, he's mean to his parents, he's mean to his brother。 His only personality trait is sarcasm TM with no redeeming quality。 And all of the other characters are so nice to him even though he absolutely does not deserve it。 I actually liked Gabi and all of the side characters and probably would have liked this more if Theo wasn't one of the worst main characters I've ever read。3。 The Ironic situations: A) Theo is mad that his uncle is stealing from his parents by making them pay a lot of money for rent, but he is also stealing from them by taking money from the tips。 But this "doesn't matter" because it's "just a few dollars here and there for the past few years" even though it's now hundreds of dollars worth in a shoebox。 Bro, you are still stealing。 B) White people appropriating and gentrifying cultures and neighborhoods is 100% a valid criticism to have and is a main part of the story of why the two BIPOC cafes are now failing (which is fine。 I love the concept on paper)。 I just thought it was ironic that Theo himself in the text says that his Chinese-Japanese family has also appropriated a Taiwanese drink to make their bubble tea cafe。4。 I love the idea of two cafes run by BIPOC people overcoming gentrification。 I do not like that the two BIPOC families hate each other and initially want to see each other fail and actively try to sabotage the other business。 Especially when one is an Asian cafe and one is a Latine cafe that don't have much, if any, overlapping competition。 If they were both east Asian/bubble tea cafes that sold the same things, I could maybe understand being a competing business, but they aren't。 Why do the only 2 BIPOC restaurants in town have to hate each other?5。 I think it's weird that a high school student (Gabi) is weirdly obsessed with his teacher。 Kids, especially queer kids, get attached to teachers and I can personally relate to that。 But it's not written well here。 It was almost creepy to me that Gabi not only has one on one time with a dance teacher outside of a class setting but has their phone number and regularly texts them and CONSTANTLY wonders what the teacher's opinion about something would be。 Every chapter of Gabi's has him wishing he could ask the teacher her opinion on something。 Their relationship isn't inappropriate but the way it's written rubbed me the wrong way。6。 For a book with only ~300 pages, this has A LOT going on in a short amount of time and some of it should have been consolidated。 Soccer practice, dance practice, trying to save 2 rivaling cafes, a "romance", homecoming committee, a subplot romance with the friend。。。 It's way too much subplot for this short amount of pages。 (For example, all we know about Thomas for the whole book is that he left for college and asshole Theo hates him。 Big Shocker。 So when Thomas comes home and says he is questioning identity too, why do I care? I didn't know you until two pages ago。) Also, selling some drinks to school kids and having one catered Homecoming dance is not going to save years and tens of thousands of dollars in business debt。 The premise has a lot of potential but this direction and execution wasn't it。TLDR; this book would be at least a 3 star book if it was more focused and if Theo wasn't it in at all。 Thank you to netgalley for a free copy in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

I think the author wanted to write tropes instead of this book, which, is totally fine, you know? Some people enjoy that。 I didn't。 It made for a very disjointed story。 Don't put everything into a book if you cannot spend enough time exploring and grounding every aspect。 Like, for example, the whole rivals-to-lovers thing? In all honesty what really made this book a 5 star instead of a 4 star for me was the overall character development of not only Gabi's parents but also the main characters themselves。 I really enjoyed the realistic writing of teenagers it is often something that sounds forced or like the author has never spoken to someone that is a teenager。 I do think that in the future a lot of the references will become very dawe'll become very dated but as it just came out this year I find it very enjoyable In all honesty what really made this book a 5 star instead of a 4 star for me was the overall character development of not only Gabi's parents but also the main characters themselves。 I really enjoyed the realistic writing of teenagers it is often something that sounds forced or like the author has never spoken to someone that is a teenager。 I do think that in the future a lot of the references will become very dawe'll become very dated but as it just came out this year I find it very enjoyable and would recommend to anyone who wants a light hearted romance read that has diversity。 。。。more
